Reuse, natural fibres and technologies that leave less behind
Is it really possible to reduce your impact on the planet as a textile company?
On World Environment Day, we reflect on our responsibility to the earth.
The sportswear industry is on a long journey towards more sustainable materials and processes. At UYN, we have chosen to move as far along that path as we can, one fibre, one technology, one decision at a time.
The materials we work with are drawn from a different vocabulary entirely. Kapok, the world's lightest natural fibre, is a plant so abundant it requires no cultivation, no irrigation, no intervention. Eucalyptus, whose cellulose yields a fibre of extraordinary breathability, is processed in a closed loop where water and enzymes are fully recovered and reused. Ariacel, derived from wood pulp filaments, is biodegradable within months of the end of its useful life. And then Biolight, Natex and Flexicorn. Materials that come from nature, not from a laboratory.
"Choosing natural fibres is a noble choice for a multitude of reasons — and one that resonates with everyone. Whoever wears them experiences a superior sense of comfort against the skin, in contact with a bio-based material that is far gentler and more beneficial to the body. A kind of comfort that integrates seamlessly with performance, made possible by the use of innovative technologies. And then, there is something deeper: these fibres are gifts of the earth, not compounds engineered in a laboratory. When we look to nature, we often find that the answer has been right in front of us all along."
Beyond materials, there are the technologies. Hundreds of patents, among them the Fullmotion and Hypermotion seam constructions, which minimise production waste while delivering maximum performance comfort for athletes. These are engineering decisions, made one fibre at a time, over years of research at our AREAS facility in Asola. Performance and responsibility developed in the same building, often by the same hands.
Then there is what happens to the material that never becomes a garment. Like others in this industry, UYN generates tonnes of textile waste every year. We recover as much of it as we can. Some returns as Airnest, our own insulation material, some is compressed into panels used in construction. Nothing leaves without a purpose.
At UYN, we do not follow the market or adapt simply to meet regulations. These principles were built into the brand from the very beginning. On World Environment Day, we are all the more glad to celebrate them. Because for us, nature is not a trend. It is our origin.
"UYN stands for Unleash Your Nature. Nature has always been — and always will be — at the heart of everything we do, beginning with the name of the brand itself. It is a call to the athlete to unleash the very best of their abilities, and it is the true origin of our products. That is why we say: nature is not a trend. It's our origin."
