Bio-based materials and performance in the new Kymra running collection
Running is one of the sports where the relationship between body and material becomes most evident. The fabric sits directly on the skin, sweat builds gradually, and every detail — weight, breathability, stability — becomes noticeable after just a few kilometres.
Kymra was born from this exact observation. More than just a new product line, it is the result of several years of work centred around one very specific question: what happens when materials of natural origin are brought into performance running?
Behind this process is AREAS, the research and development centre of Trerè Innovation, which has been working with bio-based fibres for years — not simply as a sustainable alternative, but as technical materials with their own distinct characteristics. The goal is to understand whether a natural fibre can behave differently precisely in the most demanding conditions: sweat, repetitive movement, friction and constant temperature changes.
What does it mean to run in bio-based materials?
In running, fabric is never neutral. After the first few kilometres you begin to notice whether the garment stays light, whether it holds moisture, whether it moves with the body or against it. That is why material research becomes just as important as garment design.
In the Kymra collection, the starting point is Ariacel, a fibre made from wood cellulose. It is not used simply as a “natural” alternative, but as a technical material designed to maintain lightness and breathability even as intensity increases. In internal testing, one of the most striking aspects was the way the fabric behaves once the body settles into a steady effort: the garment remains light and does not become heavier with sweat, maintaining a consistent feel against the skin.
“The difference becomes noticeable after a few kilometres. The fabric doesn’t change the way it behaves over time — it stays light and stable. It combines the performance of technical materials with the comfort typically associated with natural fibres, even during prolonged effort.”
Finding the balance between different materials
Ariacel is the starting point, but the most complex part of the work was finding the right balance between different fibres. In performance running, lightness alone is not enough: the fabric must also remain stable, manage moisture and adapt to the body’s continuous movement.
For this reason, the collection also integrates Natex, a fibre derived from castor beans that has already been used in other products precisely for its lightness and fast-drying properties. Alongside Natex, Flexicorn contributes to the stability of the garment structure, ensuring the fabric retains its shape even as intensity increases or sweating becomes more significant.
“What matters most is not the individual fibre, but how different materials react together while you run. Some work better for lightness, others for stability, others for the sensation on the skin. The final result depends entirely on the balance between these elements.”
Performance and natural materials
In recent years, research into bio-based materials has often been associated mainly with sustainability. In running, however, the conversation becomes much more concrete: what really matters is the effect the material has on the athlete’s body.
Materials such as Ariacel make it possible to create a fabric that maintains a fresher, more natural feel during the run, even as the pace increases and the skin remains in constant contact with sweat. It is about understanding the advantages nature already offers and exploring how bio-based fibres can perform more effectively from a performance perspective.
“The goal was not to prove a point, but to observe what really happens while running. In many cases the most noticeable benefit is not immediate — it becomes clear after several kilometres, when the fabric continues to behave consistently.”
What kind of running is Kymra designed for?
Kymra was created as a road running collection and is designed to perform across different intensities. From more controlled paces to faster training sessions, the garments are designed to remain light and breathable even when the run becomes more demanding.
The aim is not only to improve performance in a strict sense, but to make the relationship between body and material as natural as possible. Running in Kymra means experiencing a different approach to well-being: wearing natural fibres at moments of maximum effort can have positive effects not only during performance, but also in preparation and recovery.
