Below The Surface

BEFORE THE CHEERING. BEFORE THE FLAGS. BEFORE THE RUN.

Alpine ski athletes are usually portrayed only on race day, and only during the competitive season.
Two minutes of racing. Five months of visibility a year.

Then, nothing.
But behind the fastest descent they can deliver lies a long journey, made of climbs, pain, fatigue. Both physical and mental.

With Below the Surface we break the ice, going beyond the thin visible layer shown on race day to reveal what it truly means to compete at this level.
We met the athletes during the months when, for the media and the world, they seem not to exist.
But that’s when they are building their success. And that’s when we stand by their side.
Because alpine skiers, just like their technical gear, are not only what you see at the start gate. There’s something deeper, their base layer, that ultimately defines their performance.

We created a docufilm that uncovers all the effort and sacrifice hidden beneath the ski suit. The stars are the top athletes of the alpine skiing world. But not in winter, and not on race day.
The story begins in the off-season, in summer, when training starts while most people are resting. It focuses not only on the physical preparation – gym sessions, returning to the snow – but also on the mental training: the waiting, the fear, the desire… everything that happens during the long journey to the start gate, where you only get two minutes to make months of work count, or lose it all.

Below the Surface takes us into the deepest layers of the skier, through every stratus of the person and the athlete, before resurfacing, ready to push them into that crazy downhill run. The same sensation they feel when, just seconds before the start, snow slips into their collar and gives them an adrenaline jolt.
