Inspiration from a ski manufacturer
Where does inspiration come from for a craftsman who has made originality his signature?
This is the story of Jonno Jacobs, a ski maker who turned his passion into his craft. From a small garage in Chamonix, he founded Ronin Skis, his own brand dedicated to environmentally conscious production.
In a world driven by mass production, sometimes success comes from choosing the opposite path. Rather than relying on commercial, synthetic, and overused materials, Jonno found the answer right in front of him. Inspiration was hidden in the very place where he loves to play, breathe, and recharge, both as a runner and as a skier, on and off the slopes.
The forests of Chamonix held the key. Local wood, bio-based resins, and natural flax fiber grown in France. With research and ingenuity, combined with poplar, beech, and bamboo, they became the recipe for his workshop.
What makes ski making so fascinating is the balance between engineering and art. It’s not painting, and it’s not building a bridge. It lives in between: creativity bound by rules, nature refined through craft, mountains translated into design. And through it all, the mountain remains at the center.
From the use of natural materials to the shared source of inspiration behind our own work, we found much in common with Jonno. This is “Close Up. Inspiration from a Ski Manufacturer”, a project brought to life together with photographer and filmmaker Pete Elliot.
“I find a sense of satisfaction in creating something I can explore the mountain with, flowing on skis just as I flow through the workshop, or through a forest trail.”
